N.C. teen’s hanging death ruled a suicide; mother says it was a lynching

Dating and intimate relationships create some questions for people who are separated but not yet legally divorced. How do you navigate such a tricky situation? From a legal standpoint, there are two things you need to consider. Where you live makes a difference. You have to live in a separate residence — not in separate rooms of the family house, not even in a separate apartment over the family garage — but in an entirely separate location. You do not have to file a legal document to begin a separation, although some people prefer to do so. Second, once you are separated, are there any restrictions on forming relationships with other people? Yes, and no. With limited exceptions, once you are separated, you are generally free to date anyone who wants to date you with one big exception. Why does that matter?

A married couple from Guilford County have become the faces of a new Donald Trump-themed dating website. Barrett and Jodi Riddleberger’s smiles, beneath Trump campaign baseball caps, are the first thing greeting visitors at Trump. The Riddlebergers have been active in Guilford County Republican politics over the years. The site has gotten some media coverage recently, primarily because it’s designed to serve only straight people, letting people sign up only if they choose “straight man” or “straight woman” at the outset.

Some reports have also noted that, once a person gets past the initial sign-up page, he or she can choose “happily married” or “unhappily married” as a status before finalizing a profile and meeting new potential dates.

Attorney Andrew Murray announced Thursday that year-old Riane Leigh Brownlee was sentenced to 37 months in prison for impersonating an FBI agent and illegally possessing a firearm. On Feb. After Brownlee was arrested later the same day, she falsely told the same person that she had to keep her identity secret from law enforcement because she was operating undercover. Although domestic violence occurs at the same rate in same sex dating relationships as in opposite sex, currently NC law does not allow for same sex dating.

For the past four decades, a loophole in North Carolina’s sexual assault law has gone unchecked: A man can’t be guilty of rape if a woman agrees to sex — even if she withdraws her initial consent. Another loophole has also persisted: It’s not a crime to have sex with someone who is incapacitated, such as through drugs or alcohol, if that person was responsible for their own condition.

But those legal loopholes are on their way to being closed after lawmakers in the state Senate and House, which are both Republican-controlled, voted unanimously Thursday to pass a bill that includes language explicitly addressing such forms of sexual assault. Senate Bill now goes to Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, who is expected to sign it, according to Democratic lawmakers.

Cooper’s office said in a statement Thursday evening that he is “carefully reviewing” the bill, and is supportive of policies that “protect victims, particularly those too young to advocate for themselves. The bill’s passage is “an incredible victory for women’s rights and protections for victims of sexual assault,” said state Sen. Jeff Jackson, a Democrat representing Mecklenburg County.

Jackson had tried unsuccessfully for the past four years to get his own bill regarding the revoking of consent to advance in the Senate. But getting the “right to revoke” language, which is not gender specific, tacked onto SB this legislative session proved to be the best course. The loophole stemmed from a decision by the North Carolina State Supreme Court that set precedence in determining that “if the actual penetration is accomplished with the woman’s consent, the accused is not guilty of rape, although he may be guilty of another crime because of his subsequent actions.

S House District 9 investigation. The documents detail findings from a investigation in which Dowless worked for a third candidate running against incumbent Robert Pittenger and challenger Mark Harris. The documents have multiple written statements saying Dowless paid people to collect absentee ballots and then return them to him, which is illegal. Those are very similar accusations to the allegations that have surfaced in this year’s U. House District 9 election.

In a January memo referring Dowless and others for criminal charges, state elections investigators detailed interviews in which people who had worked for Dowless in the election cycle described collecting absentee ballots from voters. Because of the potential for mischief, it is against North Carolina law for anyone other than a voter or immediate relative to handle someone’s absentee ballot before it is sealed and mailed.

In one interview, two ballot collectors told investigators, “Dowless told them that he would only pay half of what they earned when they brought the absentee ballot request forms to him and would not pay the remainder until after they collected and provided Dowless with the voters’ ballots as proof that the person had voted. The documents also say Dowless tried to obstruct a Board of Elections investigation in that election by instructing his hired hands on what to say to state investigators.
